5 Amazing Health Benefits of Dry Brushing

Dry brushing does wonders for your skin and ever since I started incorporating this into my daily skincare routine, I can't live without it! It's a wonderful way to practice self-care and is so easy with amazing benefits.

I used to suffer from the driest skin on my legs and would constantly scratch all the time until my legs would start to bleed. Ugh, I know. I would waste a lot of money buying different kinds of lotions for my skin to solve this problem. But after I started dry brushing, I noticed my skin would feel a lot more calm and soothed. There's really no point to apply moisturizer on your skin when there is a layer of dead skin cells on it. Dry brushing is an amazing way to reinvigorate your skin.

So, where do we start? First, all you need is a brush and it's important to make sure it's a natural bristle brush. I got mine at Sparkling Hill Resort (you can read my old post here) as a complimentary gift to my mud wrap treatment. I've seen them at drugstores like London Drugs or even beauty salons as well.

How exactly do you dry brush? I personally take less than 5 minutes to dry brush and I do this before my evening shower. This prepares your skin by exfoliating the dead skin off before stepping into the shower. Simply start at your feet and brush towards your heart. You can be as rough or gentle as you want depending on your personal preference. (PS. I should warn you that the feeling is so good that it can be addictive!) Then I jump into the shower. The steam from a hot shower will naturally open your pores to prepare your freshly exfoliated skin to absorb body oil more effectively.

The last step is to hydrate your skin with body oil. I have been loving organic coconut oil lately.  I made my own jar of coconut oil as featured in the photo. If I feel like something more luxurious, I'll use Caudalie Divine Oil or Josie Maran Argan Oil. You can also use jojoba oil, olive oil or whatever else you like. The results are glowing, energized, healthy happy skin. 

There are so many health benefits of dry brushing, so I narrowed it down to my top 5 which are:

Improve circulation. Dry brushing helps break down toxins. By increasing circulation to your skin, this helps reduce cellulite. Cellulite is toxic material that is accumulated in your body's fat cells.

Remove dead skin. This will help to smooth and brighten your skin. It also helps unclog pores to absorb body oil better. Your skin will feel hydrated, soothed and happy!

Lymphatic drainage. Toxic lymph buildup causes aging and wrinkles. By draining toxins, this encourages the body to discharge metabolic wastes. 

► Helps with digestion and organ (kidney) detoxification. Dry brushing massages your lymph nodes which helps your body shed water and toxins. 

Reduce anxiety and stress. This is my personal favourite way to practice self-love and self-care. For me, dry brushing is my precious me time and the meditative act helps me to reduce muscle tension and calm my mind.
