The Benefits of the Beauty Protein: Collagen

The Benefits of the Beauty Protein: Collagen

I've developed a strong interest in wellness with the goal of leading a more healthy lifestyle ever since I was diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis at age 24. The moment I realized I could lose my health, was the moment I decided to change my lifestyle. With the amount of knowledge I've gained through my own research and learning from my health and skincare professionals, I am always excited to share the beneficial things I've learned with my readers. In this post, I want to share you with about a super powerful and precious protein:

Why is collagen important? Well, collagen is essentially the key to keeping you feeling and looking your best from inside out! This protein makes up 75% of our skin and 30% of the protein in our bodies. Think about it as the glue that holds everything inside of us together including our ligaments, joints and bones.

The deterioration of collagen doesn't only manifest visibly in wrinkles, fine lines and dry skin, but also in joint pain and physical ailments. For me personally, I'm always looking for a remedy to treat my stiff and swollen joints that are symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis. Being responsible about my collagen intake allows me to feel in control and proactive about taking better care of my health.

Getting right to the point, these are the benefits of collagen:

  • Achieve smooth, radiant and glowing skin
  • Stimulate hair and nail growth
  • Reduce joint pain and degeneration
  • Promote gut health
  • Kick start metabolism and boost energy
  • Detox your body

Now, here's a quick biology lesson to break down why collagen is so important for our bodies. As children, our bodies are abundant with collagen but it declines as we naturally age. Did you know that after the age of 25, collagen synthesis reduces at a rate of 1.5% a year?! Ugh, I know it's a bummer to hear. I was disheartened when I found this out, but don't despair because there are many ways to preserve your collagen. Leading a healthy lifestyle by protecting yourself from UV exposure, controlling your stress levels, not smoking, limiting your sugar intake and other refined foods combined with other positive choices are some of the ways to slow down collagen degradation.

If you're following me on Instagram, you would have seen my announcement that I've started to work with Bend Beauty as a Beauty Ambassador. I'm really excited about this as it was such a natural fit as I've been a fan of their skincare products ever since I was recommended to take it by my facialist about a couple years ago. I've been very happy about the results that I've noticed before and after I started taking their Marine Collagen + Co Factors product.

The Marine Collagen + Co Factors product is so easy and convenient to take (just a 2.5 teaspoons into water or your favourite tea/smoothie), and the natural strawberry flavour is delightful. I know the product works wonderfully for me, because the moment I stop taking it in my routine, I can sense a discrepancy in my skin, body, joints and overall health.

The experts at Bend Beauty designed their products with the philosophy of taking care of the skin from inside out. When consumed orally, collagen peptides are absorbed right into the blood stream to reach the dermis where they stimulate the production of collagen as well as hyaluronic acid, which is another important component of the skin's matrix. It's all about building healthy collagen! If you'd like to learn more about their products, they have an informative website here.
