My anti-aging skincare routine

Now that I'm in my late twenties, I'm more conscious about my skincare routine and am proactive about nourishing my skin from inside out so that I can age gracefully and confidently. Aging is something natural that we all experience in our lives. Wrinkles, sagging skin and fine lines are just part of life. I fully accept it and want to embrace it by taking steps now in my twenties to set myself up for success with a future that doesn't involve invasive procedures, needles or knives.

It's not entirely true that the secret to aging well is genetics. Sure, your DNA plays a part of it, but the environment we live in and our lifestyles play a big role too. Regulating our cortisol levels and having healthy ways to manage and control our stress is important to keep our hormones in check. Thankfully, there are things we can do to live our best life in our best skin. I've noticed my skin improving a lot after making some lifestyle changes, and wanted to share with you in this post on the things I do for my anti-aging skincare routine.

My Anti-Aging Skincare Routine

1. Drink lots of water.

I start my day with a warm cup of water with lemon and aim to drink 8 cups a day. Alkalized water helps kickstart your metabolism and neutralize your body's pH balance. Although I can't resist an almond latte or matcha latte, I try my best to reduce my intake of caffeine as it drains hydration and can have high acidity levels. Although our skin is the largest organ, it is also the last organ that water gets to. The key is to top up your water intake after consuming caffeine.

2. Wear SPF

UV exposure and being in direct sunlight is the easiest way to age your skin. Make sure to wear SPF everyday, even on cloudy days as the UV rays are still strong. Get yourself a nice big sun hat or baseball cap to protect your face from the sun if you can. I love being in the sunshine and like the look of being tanned, but now I'm especially more mindful of the consequences of UV damage. The sunscreen that I wear is Coola's SPF 30 Mineral Sunscreen, which I love because it works really well with my sensitive skin and has a nice smooth matte finish.

3. Exercise regulary

Working up a sweat regularly helps keep your body fit and allows your body to release toxins. My go to work out is barre fitness as I like the combination of cardio and strength training and how it focuses on alignment. For more intense work outs, I'll do strength training with weights like kettle bells and resistance bands. If you can't make it to the gym or to a fitness class, going for a walk or run in your neighbourhood is always good especially when the weather is nice in the summertime. The endorphin boost after a work out is always a bonus for your mood and energy!

4. Exfoliate once a week

Exfoliating helps to get rid of dead skin and generate cell turnover. I tend to over exfoliate my skin too often which can stimulate excess sebum, so being disciplined about only exfoliating once a week as recommended by my facialist has helped a lot. The product I use is ZO Clinical Invisapeel which is really powerful and easy to use as all I need to do is leave it on my skin overnight after cleansing.

5. Eat the rainbow

Having a diet that is rich in plant-based ingredients, lean meat (turkey, chicken, salmon) and high fats (avocado, coconut oil, olive oil, nuts, seeds) helps to nourish your body and boost your glow. Ingredients that are fresh, bright and colourful help boost radiant skin. Eating what is in season is always the best. I love berries (strawberries, blueberries, raspberries) a lot, and when they're not in season will get them frozen. The easiest way to enjoy them is to whip up a delicious smoothie. For a really yummy and easy smoothie recipe, check this recipe out. I also add a scoop of Bend Beauty's marine collagen to my smoothie for a super powerful beauty elixir.

6. Take your supplements

Natural supplements are essential to make sure you get all the nutrients your body needs for optimum health. My everyday supplements are probiotic, vitamin B complex, vitamin C, vitamin D, magnesium and fish oil. My favourite fish oil is Bend Beauty's anti-aging formula. It has high quality EPA+DHA, which is essentially a fish-derived omega-3 fatty acid, along with other active ingredients that help build your resistance to UV damage. I've noticed a transformation in my skin ever since I started taking it in terms of how fresh and glowy my skin looks. I absolutely recommend it!

7. Go to bed early

This is particularly hard for me because I'm just a night owl by nature! What has helped me a lot is establishing a healthy bedtime routine which means after 10pm it's time to shut off devices as the blue light that screens emit keep your brain wired and awake. Doing something relaxing like giving yourself a face massage, reading, or meditating is great to help unwind. Sleep is so important not only to keep us from functioning well, but it's especially important for our skin as this it the time that your body gets to rest which allows your skin cells to repair and regenerate.

8. Practice self-care

There are so many things we can do to and so many products that can enhance an anti-aging skincare routine. However, I personally believe that as long as you always remember to practice self-care by being kind to yourself, not comparing yourself to others, accepting and loving yourself unconditionally, that your inner beauty will shine through naturally and gracefully. Life is a precious gift, and it's our opportunity everyday to make the best of it and work on becoming the best version of ourselves!
