What's in My Bag: Carry-On Travel Essentials

What's in My Bag: Carry-on Travel Essentials

a 2018 travel post

I used to have the hardest time packing light when it came to traveling. It still is a challenge for sure, however now I've discovered the art of traveling light when it comes to my carry-on bag. As I'm currently on my honeymoon and traveling to the most places I've ever traveled to in one single trip, I was inspired to share what I bring with me in my carry-on bag when I travel.

My priorities when it comes to what makes the cut for my carry-on include only the things that are essential for comfort, cleanliness and convenience.

These are my carry-on travel essentials:

1. A good bag

My carry-on bag of choice is my Celine micro luggage tote for long-haul flights. As for short-haul flights, I pack everything in my Kånken Mini. And yes, it's a kid's backpack and I rock it like a boss. I prefer a sturdy top-handle handbag or a compact backpack to a rolling luggage bag as I don't need to worry about getting it in and out of the overhead storage which can be a pain in the butt. It's less of a hassle and a great way to travel light.

2. Water bottle & snacks

I pack a granola bar or two (I love the dark chocolate & peanut butter Kind Bars) that keep me feeling satisfied when I'm feeling hungry on the plane. I always bring my stainless steel water bottle with me wherever I go. I like that it maintains the temperature of my liquids for hours so I can enjoy my hot/cold drink du jour on the plane. I also prepare lemon wedges and keep them in my water bottle to stay hydrated and alkalize my body. Alkaline water helps the body's immunology, metabolic and repair system to function properly. It's important to keep your body staying strong and healthy in a stressful environment like a flight.

3. Cozy wool socks and a blanket scarf

It's important for me to stay comfortable in order to get some sleep on a plane. I always dress in casual attire, or rather comfy chic which includes leggings, sweatshirts and sneakers. Changing into a pair of comfortable socks is a habit I've developed over the years I've traveled. I always get cold feet and I hate when that happens, so I wear a pair of thick wool socks that go above my ankles. It's a simple luxury that makes traveling more pleasant for me.

4. Hand sanitizer, wet wipes and tissue paper

Cleanliness is critical for a hopeless germophobe like me on a plane so I carry these items with me to prevent feeling icky. Often times, I'll wear a flu mask as well if I'm feeling tired and know my immune system might be compromised. The last thing you want is to fall ill while traveling which for me would totally be devastating!

5. Noise-cancelling earphones

Crying babies? Not a bother! Only with a pair of good noise-cancelling headphones that is. These are so necessary for me to help drown out irritating noise. I have an awesome pair of Bose earphones that allow me to immerse in my own music and enjoy peace of mind on a flight.

6. Eye mask and magnesium supplements

For all the eyelash extension addicts out there, the best kind of eye mask to wear is one with molded foam to protect your lashes. I also take natural supplements such as magnesium as a sleep aid to help me doze off into dreamland.

7. Personal hygiene items

I have a little kit that includes travel-sized toothpaste, mouthwash and dental floss to keep me feeling refreshed. It's important to me to maintain my routine even when traveling long distances.

8. Skincare items

I have a diligent on-flight skincare routine which includes removing makeup, cleaning my face and then moisturizer and a sheet mask. Airplane air is terribly drying and the flight environment is the perfect trigger for some serious skin damage. Makeup (especially heavy foundation) is a major no-no for me as dirt and environmental pollutants cling on to makeup which leads to free radical damage. It's important for me to allow my skin to breathe and keep it hydrated on a flight for clear and radiant skin.

I hope you enjoyed reading this post. Whether you are currently traveling, planning your next trip or a 24/7 wanderluster like myself, I'd love to hear about your own carry-on travel essentials in the comments below.
